Die Muräne hat sehr spitze Fangzähne, mit denen sie hervorragend auf Beutefang gehen kann und auch glitschige Fische und Kraken sehr gut festhalten kann. Sie hat aber keine Giftzähne oder Giftdrüsen. Sie greift auch nicht einfach so vorbeischwimmende Taucher an. Sie verteidigt sich nur, wenn sie sich sehr bedrängt fühlt. Bei einem Biss kann es jedoch durch den in der Mundhöhle befindlichen Hautschleim manchmal zu Infektionen kommen. Das ständige Auf und Zuklappen des Maules ist auch keine Drohgebärde, sondern dieser Fisch besitzt keine Kiemendeckel und muss das Atemwasser durch diese Maulbewegungen durch den langen, schmalen Kiemenapparat drücken. Ihre schlängelnde Fortbewegung ist beeindruckend. Aber die Muränen haben eine besondere Vorliebe für Kraken und es ist so, dass, wo viele Muränen sind, man leider nur selten einen Kraken (polpi) findet. Eine große Muräne kann einen kleinen Polpo mit einem Biss verschlingen. Manchmal sieht man auch Kraken, denen ein oder mehrere Fangarme fehlen, die dann mit der Zeit nachwachsen.
